The East and Mid Devon Community Safety Partnership
TACKLING RURAL CRIME
Due to increasing concerns regarding crimes being committed within rural communities the East and Mid Devon Community Safety Partnership has agreed to include tackling rural crime as one of its priorities for the next 12 months. CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE MAY 2015 : Don't become the Victim of Crime |
Plough & Share Credit Union
Credit Unions are not-for-profit organisations which are owned by their members. If you apply for a loan or a savings account you will pay a membership fee and become a member. The basic principle is that members save in a communal fund from which they can borrow at a low cost. Any surplus at the end of the financial year can go back to members in the form of a dividend. |
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Community Messaging Service
The Messaging Service comprises warning messages sent out by the police about local incidents which may affect us i.e. reports of bogus callers operating in East Devon, garden sheds being broken into etc.
If anyone wishes to receive these emails please let Martin Rowles know at martinrowles@btinterent.com.
Bogus Callers/Distraction Burglars
Here are a few tips to help keep you safe at home.
· If you are not sure who is at your door – don’t open it.
-
Remember to use your door chain if you have to open your front door to strangers.
-
Always properly check the identity of all callers if they are not known to you before opening your door.
-
Beware of common trick such as being asked to make a telephone call, wanting to retrieve a lost ball (even if it is a child) or being asked to check your water, gas or electric. If in doubt keep your door secure.
-
Always look up telephone numbers for yourself – do not accept numbers provided by callers as they could be bogus.
-
Always keep doors and windows secure – it is easy for strangers to enter the rear of your home when you are busy answering the front door to their accomplice.
-
Be suspicious of anyone you do not know. If someone is looking for work or offering services, don’t rush to agree or sign any documents. It is a good idea to seek a second opinion before agreeing to any work.
-
Ask a friend or neighbour to be available to help if you need them. |

OTTERY HELP SCHEME The HELP Scheme is run by Helen Harms and Jane Ross who organise a hard working group of volunteers from The Station in Ottery St Mary. Their aim is to assist people in the community, either getting to the surgery, to Ottery St Mary Hospital or to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The Scheme offers advice and practical help in many areas such as wheelchairs. Volunteers can also visit people at home, help with shopping and take patients to Day Centres. The HELP Scheme performs a vital service in our community acting as a bridge for vulnerable people enabling them to access health care. There is always a need for volunteers and money to run the service and any support is gratefully accepted. If you would like more information please telephone Helen or Jane on 01404 813041 or visit their website at http://www.otteryhelpscheme.org.uk/. |
